GC 01 - True Square

Below is a walk-through on how to draw a True Square using analogue tools (although it's done in AutoCAD for accuracy's sake). Click on the arrow to the right to flip through each step.

As mentioned above, we can draw a True Square using analogue tools such as:

  • Dividers

  • Pencil

  • Straight Edge

  • Eraser

Drawing a True Square:

  1. Draw a line (using a straight edge and pencil) at a random direction and convenient length.

  2. Draw a second line so as to cross the first one. Choose a convenient direction.

  3. Mark the intersection of the two lines with a pencil (point 3).

  4. Draw a circle (using a compass), the radius of which is up to you. It will intersect the two lines at four locations.

  5. Mark 1st intersection (or point 5).

  6. Mark 2nd intersection (or point 6).

  7. Mark 3rd intersection (or point 7).

  8. Connect 5 with 6 using the straight edge and pencil.

  9. Connect 6 with 7 in a similar fashion.

The resulting angle between lines 5-6 and 6-7 should be 90 degrees. Keep in mind that doing this exercise by hand requires some steadiness and decent tools, especially when it comes to the quality of the dividers and compasses. Cheap plastic ones oftentimes do not retain the spread of their legs which leads to incremental geometric inaccuracies. The more steps are required in a given exercise, the greater the inaccuracy at the end.
