GC-11 Splitting The Circumference Of A Circle

The following animations shows how to split the circumference of a given circle in 6 equal fragments:

Needed analogue tools:

  • Dividers

  • Pencil

  • Straight Edge

  • Eraser

Given:

  • Circle A-B, Ø=D=10

Desired:

  • 6x60°-Arcs

  1. Set one leg (of the dividers) anywhere, choose circle's R (radius) with the other. Describe the circumference.

  2. Keep dividers' R-spread, set one leg anywhere on the circumference.

  3. "Cut" the circumference with the other.

  4. Mark the cut/intersection as Point a.

  5. Similarly to Step 2, set one leg on Point a, then make another cut - through the circumference.

  6. Mark the intersection as Point b.

  7. Following the pattern above (Step 2-3, 3-4), find the rest of the points - c, d, e, f.

  8. Using the straight edge, connect the circle's center point to Point f.

  9. In the same way, connect the rest of the "cut" points to the center point:

    1. O-a

    2. O-b

    3. O-c

    4. O-d

    5. O-e

  10. Angle f-O-a is 1/6th of the circle's area. Arc f-O-a also splits circle's circumference length in 6 equal fragments.
