GC-08 Construct A Parallel Line Through Given Point And Line Segment III

And that would be a third way of building a line parallel to given point and line:

Needed analogue tools:

  • Dividers

  • Pencil

  • Straight Edge

  • Eraser

Given:

  • Line A-B

  • Point C

Desired:

  • Line H-I

  1. Place a Point, D, conveniently on Line A-B.

  2. Using a straight edge connect D with C to form Line D-C.

  3. Connect A with C in a similar fashion.

  4. Keep the straight edge lined up with Points A and C, and extend the line beyond C by a distance equal to A-C. Use a set of dividers - stretch the dividers to match the A-C distance. Then, while maintaining the stretch, set one leg on Point C and the other onto the extended line. Extend line if it falls short.

  5. Mark the intersection of the second leg and the extended line as E.

  6. As we did in Step 4, extend Line A-B to the right by a convenient distance. Measure off distance A-D with the dividers, then, while keeping the stretch, place one leg on Point D and the other on the extended line.

  7. Mark as F the new intersection of the dividers and the extended line (Step 6).

  8. Connect F and E to form Line F-E.

  9. Measure distance D-C using the dividers. Then place one leg, while legs' stretch remains unchanged, on Point F and the other on Line F-E.

  10. Mark as G the intersection of the dividers and Line F-E.

  11. Finally, connect G with C to form Line G-C and Line H-I by extension.

Thus, you construct a Line (H-I) parallel to a given Line (A-B) and through a given Point (C).
